Star 45
Star 45 is a 45" long hard chine hull; semi-scale model of the full-size Olympic Star. Some of these models are scratch built using plans available from the AMYA. Others are partially fabricated with major components available from suppliers. Typically, one can get a used Star 45, ready to sail for as little as $300.00. Brand new boats made of fiberglass with all radio electronics run $600 to $1200 built.
If your new to the sport, I always recommend buying a used boat over a new boat. This allows you to get out there to sail now instead of waiting to build a boat. Once you have a used boat, then it's time to build the new boat. You can copy what you like about the used boat into the new and you have the opportunity to fix or re-work what you do not like about the used boat. Once the new boat is done, you can usually get 100% of your money back when selling the used boat. My first Star 45 has been re-sold about 6 times now and changes colors every time it does.
Boat Performance: 0 to 20 mph with one rig. Very responsive, fast in all winds.
